Morocco, Atlas Mountains

Overview

Morocco, situated in North Africa on the Atlantic coast is bordered by Algeria and Mauritania with Spain just across the Strait of Gibraltar to its North. A fascinating world of extremes, from vibrant exotic cities to the remote beautiful wilderness of the Atlas mountains and the sand dunes of the Moroccan Saharah dessert, it truly is a land of adventure!

Itinerary

The expedition itinerary is a progressive phased programme of familiarisation/acclimatisation, qualifying expedition, rest and relaxation ensuring teams have the best chance of success on their qualifying expedition as well as ensuring they have an opportunity to get the most from their overseas expedition.

Day 1 - 2 : Acclimatisation

On arrival teams are met by our in country transport and taken to their hotel in the bustling medievil city of Marrakech were they will spend their first night. The next morning after breakfast following a fine tradition of nomads and traders stretching back centuries teams will venture out to the medina, Djemaa el-fns, Marakechs main market place to buy expedition supplies. After a morning of sourcing and checking supplies teams then travel to our base camp at Aroumd in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains in the shadow of Mount Toubkal, North Africas highest mountain. Teams then spend the remainder of the day familiarising themselves with the local area and making the final preparations for their Qualifying Expedition.

Day 3 - 6 : Qualifying Expedition

Over the next 4 days teams will journey through, over and around the stunning remote wilderness of the High Atlas mountains enjoying the silence and solitude of this breatking landscape. Transiting through remote Berber villages and terraced fields they will experience the warm hospitality of the Berber people and observe a way of life that has not changed for centuries. At the end of each day teams will camp in the wild allowing them to savour and reflect on their experience. On day 4 and on completion of the qualifying expedition they will return to base camp where they will be able to rest, recover and reflect  before the return journey to their hotel in Marrakech.

Day 7 - 8 : Rest and Relaxation

After a good nights sleep teams will have the opportunity to explore the buzzing, hussle and bustle of the souks in the centre of Marrakech, in amongst the endless stalls of vibrant colours they will have the chance to barter for souvenirs and gifts or watch the world go by while enjoying a cup of mint tea in one of the many cafes. In the evening as the sun begins to set the main square comes into its own and the curtain goes up on open air food stalls creating mouth watering aromas, storytellers, jugglers and performers all begin to appear, entertaining and enthusing the crowds of local people who gather in the square each night. An opportunity to immerse yourself in the Moroccan community and a fantastic way to end your adventure. The following morning we will pack and say good bye to Morocco before flying back to the UK.
