DofE OPEN EXPEDITIONS

OVERSEAS PROGRAMMES

Overview

At Adventure Training & Expeditions our friendly team of experts have many years of experience in running DofE open expeditions overseas and know that it can be a daunting but exciting challenge for a young person. Our tried and tested programme will train you and then allow you to practice your skills, so as to give you the best chance of success on your overseas qualifying expedition. Throughout your training and expeditions we will be there to help you and will do our best to make sure you feel relaxed, answer your questions, have fun but above all are safe. Our DofE expeditions are about learning useful skills, taking on a challenge, making new friends, experiencing new places and discovering things about ourselves and our surroundings.

Programme Content

Our programme of training, practice and qualifying expeditions is tried and tested, the programme does not cut corners but instead prepares you for success. We believe that the saying "Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail" is never more true than in the outcome of an expedition.

Our programme;

1) Training
An intense but fun two day programme provides you with all of the training required as per the DofE expedition training framework. Delivered by our highly experienced and qualified instructors, you are given the knowledge, skills and top tips to help you to prepare for your UK practice expedition and overseas qualifying expeditions.
2) Practice Expedition
On day one of the practice expedition you will be eased into the challenges of expedition life with a familiarisation day giving you the opportunity to chat with your expedition supervisor and reacquaint yourself with basic campcraft, discuss routes and safety procedures. On day two under the guidance of one of our highly experienced and qualified expedition instructors you and your team are given an "In the field training day" allowing you to put into practice the training you have previously had. On day three you and your team then take ownership of your expedition and complete the remainder of the expedition as a team on your own but with our supervisors on hand should your team need further training or assistance.
3) Planning Day
Prior to your qualifying expedition you will meet with an experienced AT&E instructor to confirm the details of your qualifying expedition and take any questions you may have. You will then receive specific in country training required before then planning your qualifying expedition.
4) Qualifying Expedition
On arrival at your qualifying expedition country you will be met at the airport and transported to your basecamp. At basecamp you will meet your assessor and expedition supervisor who will then spend time working with you and your team to ensure you are ready to undertake your qualifying venture. Camp craft skills will be revised before you then settle into basecamp. The next day you will spend the day with an experienced AT&E instructor in the local expedition area conducting practical in country specific training. In the evening safety, routes, equipment and emergency procedures are discussed and checked before you and your team complete your final preparations before your expedition begins. As per DofE rules and 20 conditions teams must be self sufficient during the expedition however our supervisors and assessors will be on the ground meeting you along the way to check everything is ok and to have a chat.
5) Rest and Relaxation
On completion of your qualifying expedition and a well earned rest you will have the opportunity to participate in rest and relaxation activities as per your countries itinerary.
